Must-See Attractions in Alkmaar

Alkmaar is known worldwide as the Netherlands’ premier cheese city, but this charming town has much more to offer. You can stroll through a beautiful historic center filled with centuries-old monuments, picturesque canals, and quaint, hidden courtyards. These are the spots you definitely shouldn’t miss.

Cheese Market

From April through September, the square is bustling every Friday morning: that’s when the traditional cheese market takes place. Cheese carriers in white suits and colorful hats bring the cheeses to the scales on sleds, a tradition that dates back centuries. Be sure to arrive early, because by around 10:00 a.m. the square is packed.

Waagplein and the Waag Tower

Waagplein is the busiest square in Alkmaar and a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee or a beer on a patio. Towering over this square is the Waag, a centuries-old building that once served as a cheese weigh house. It now houses the Dutch Cheese Museum, where you can learn how cheese is made.

Alkmaar's Canals & Old Town

Hop on a canal boat and see the city from the water, or take a stroll through the narrow streets of the historic city center. Amid the canal-side houses with their distinctive facades, you’ll find small boutiques, cozy cafes, and hidden courtyards. Feel free to turn down a side street—that’s often where you’ll find the most charming spots.
