Frequently asked questions:
How much time should you set aside for a day trip to Alkmaar?
How much time should you set aside for a day trip to Alkmaar?
Half a day is enough to see the highlights. The city center isn’t very big: with the cheese market, a boat tour, and a stroll through the shopping streets, a morning or afternoon will fly by. If you’d also like to visit a museum and enjoy a hearty lunch, you’ll easily be out and about until late afternoon. Since the drive from our park to the city takes only 20 minutes, you can also split up your day: head into the city in the morning, then spend the afternoon at the beach in Bergen aan Zee or the Schoorl Dunes.
Is Alkmaar worth a visit even outside of the cheese market season?
Is Alkmaar worth a visit even outside of the cheese market season?
Yes, absolutely! The cheese market runs until the end of September, but there’s still plenty to do after that. The museums, the courtyards, the Grote Sint-Laurenskerk, and the shopping streets are actually even more enjoyable during the quieter months, because it’s peaceful everywhere and you can just walk right in. On top of that, there are some great events in the fall and winter, such as the Alkmaar Light Festival in late October and the winter fair on Waagplein and in the Old Town in December.
Can I bring my dog to Alkmaar?
Can I bring my dog to Alkmaar?
Yes, that’s no problem. The city center has limited car traffic, and most outdoor cafes around Waagplein and the Platte Stenenbrug are happy to welcome dogs. However, during the cheese market, it gets very crowded around Waagplein, so it’s a better idea to visit at a quieter time or take a stroll along the canals. Shops and museums generally don’t allow dogs. At our park, a maximum of 2 dogs per vacation home are welcome.
